Trainee Field Archaeologist (one year contract)

Location: Glasgow / Edinburgh
Salary: £16,500 - £18,300 per annum (dependent upon experience)

Details:
GUARD Archaeology Limited are looking to engage a Trainee Field Archaeologist early in 2020. The post is funded by the City of Edinburgh Council and for much of the time the successful candidate will be directly involved in the archaeological investigations associated with Phase 2 of the Edinburgh Tram Scheme. The archaeology expected during this next phase of the trams includes remnants of Medieval and post-Medieval building and structures, and human remains, as well as other previously unknown archaeology. When not in the field the successful individual will be based at our main office in Glasgow or at our Edinburgh office, but may also be involved in other projects throughout Scotland. This post is aimed at inexperienced excavators and those with no experience who have a desire to enter the profession. The post will require individuals to undertake fieldwork and post-excavation work under supervision from professional archaeologists, whilst undertaking an NVQ in Archaeological Practice (level 3) qualification.

We are primarily interested in candidates with enthusiasm, strong ability and a willingness to work as part of a team. The successful candidate should have an interest in history and archaeology, enjoy working out of doors and be willing to apply themselves to learning and developing a career in archaeology. Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office is preferable.

The successful candidate will embark on a structured CIfA-Approved training programme overseen by experienced field and office staff leading ultimately to a PCIfA application and accreditation. In addition, they will be mentored and guided by an experienced NVQ assessor throughout their year long traineeship leading to certification by the end of year one.

Benefits of becoming a GUARD Archaeology Trainee include:

  • A 35-hour working week
  • 28 days leave per year (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • A CIfA-Approved company training scheme leading to PCIfA accreditation
  • An accompanying NVQ in Archaeological Practice to provide the candidate with an academic qualification at the end of year one
  • 100% of CIfA subscription fees (from the moment you join)
  • Free transport from offices to sites
  • High quality personal protective equipment
  • Paid accommodation and subsistence payments provided for away-based projects
