Over 2012, 2013 and 2014, GUARD Archaeology, in collaboration with the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology, embarked on a joint funded venture by the National Trust for Scotland and the BBC to reveal the true location of the Battle of Bannockburn.
Co-ordinated by GUARD Archaeology Project Manager, Warren Bailie, the project was structured to provide an opportunity for community involvement throughout. Combining 'Big Dig' phases of work with a number of set piece investigations that combined geophysical surveys, metal detector surveys and archaeological test pits and trenches, the Bannockburn 700 project enabled over 700 volunteers the chance to explore the rich history of the Stirling area and identify archaeological remains of the battlefield.
The results of the Bannockburn 700 will feature in a BBC television programme, presented by Neil Oliver and Tony Pollard, to be aired on the 700th Anniversary of the battle itself in 2014.
